Assessment of beta-lactam allergy labels with an electronic medical record in Catalonia
Gustavo-J. Molina – UDFOH
Hypersensitivity to beta-lactam (BL) antibiotics is one of the most frequent reported allergy. However, less than 20% of the labelled patients to this drug are certainly allergic taking into account most of the published studies. Being labelled as an allergic to BLs implies the use of wider spectrum antibiotics with more adverse effects and a higher cost. It is frequent to find labels of BL allergy in electronic medical records that have not been assessed and verified.
Topics and Techniques Covered:
- The study assesses how the allergy diagnostic approach is performed in catalonia in order to remove or confirm labels of allergy to beta-lactam antibiotics.
- Predictors of positive/negative diagnostic approach were discussed
- Basal characteristics of the patients, type of hypersensitivity reactions and its outcomes were discussed
- Regarding clinical implications, this study focuses in the low rate of true beta-lactam allergy despite of the outnombrous false labels were registered. It is an important matter that has to be adressed due to the increasing burden of multirresistant bacteria.
