Dual Cannabis-Tobacco Use in Individuals Undergoing Treatment for Cannabis Use Disorder in Catalonia: The DuCATA Study

Cannabis is the most widely used illicit substance globally and in Spain, where it is often consumed mixed with tobacco. This dual consumption intensifies psychosocial and psychiatric issues, making cessation more challenging. Despite its prevalence, knowledge about dual dependence and associated withdrawal syndromes remains limited.

Topics and Techniques Covered:

  • Patterns of Dual Consumption: The study examines how cannabis and tobacco are used together, and the effects on health and treatment outcomes.
  • Withdrawal Symptoms: Discussion of withdrawal symptoms experienced during attempts to reduce or quit cannabis and tobacco use.
  • Baseline Data: Presentation of baseline data from the study, which includes sociodemographic characteristics, tobacco and cannabis consumption patterns, and initial motivation to quit.

 

Assessment of beta-lactam allergy labels with an electronic medical record in Catalonia

Hypersensitivity to beta-lactam (BL) antibiotics is one of the most frequent reported allergy. However, less than 20% of the labelled patients to this drug are certainly allergic taking into account most of the published studies. Being labelled as an allergic to BLs implies the use of wider spectrum antibiotics with more adverse effects and a higher cost. It is frequent to find labels of BL allergy in electronic medical records that have not been assessed and verified.

Topics and Techniques Covered:

  • The study assesses how the allergy diagnostic approach is performed in catalonia in order to remove or confirm labels of allergy to beta-lactam antibiotics.
  • Predictors of positive/negative diagnostic approach were discussed
  • Basal characteristics of the patients, type of hypersensitivity reactions and its outcomes were discussed
  • Regarding clinical implications, this study focuses in the low rate of true beta-lactam allergy despite of the outnombrous false labels were registered. It is an important matter that has to be adressed due to the increasing burden of multirresistant bacteria.
