The head of the department of neurology at the Hospital de Sant Pau and Santa Cruz de Barcelona, Alberto Lleó, explained the latest developments in the investigation of the molecular mechanisms that lead to Alzheimer’s disease. It was last October 25 as part of the seminars IDIBELL.

Lleó group works on a multimodal approach in several markers and in discover more with the aim of early detection of Alzheimer’s disease. “This approach is very important because not all Alzheimer’s disease have the same cause and also may result in different regions of the brain.”

“Our research should be directed at the prevention because when the first symptoms of dementia appear, the chances of successfully respond to treatment are minimal because they carry 2, 3 or 4 decades of neurodegeneration,” said Lleó. “I believe that in about 10-15 years when people fulfill 50 years we could get an MRI to prevent Alhzeimer like women going to have a mammogram for breast cancer prevention.”

Albert Lleó explained that in the coming months will be three secondary prevention trials that may provide much information about how we move forward in the investigation of this disease.
