On Thursday, November 24, the Sociathlon Sports Solidarity Association delivered a check for 12,665 euros to IDIBELL and the Bellvitge University Hospital to help finance ALS research. At the event attended Dr. Gabriel Capellá, director of IDIBELL, and Dr. Mónica Povedano, principal investigator of the research group in Neurological Diseases and Neurogenetics, thanked the effort and commitment of the association in promoting research as a tool to improve the quality of life of patients with ALS.
The Sociathlon is a swimming, cycling, and athletics sporting event where 100% of registrations, donations to “number 0” and “in situ” collections go to two entities chosen annually. This year, they selected IDIBELL and the AiguaMarina de Salou Association to distribute the 25,330 euros raised with the 1,300 registrations.
This is the seventh edition of the Sociathlon which through the organization of sports events for the whole family, wants to promote health and solidarity. The association members declare: “we are very proud to be able to help organizations such as IDIBELL that work to find possible cures for ALS in each edition. Another year we are very satisfied with the objective achieved and the great reception that this initiative.”
The Bellvitge Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBELL) is a biomedical research center created in 2004. It is participated by the Bellvitge University Hospital and the Viladecans Hospital of the Catalan Institute of Health, the Catalan Institute of Oncology, the University of Barcelona and the City Council of L’Hospitalet de Llobregat.
IDIBELL is a member of the Campus of International Excellence of the University of Barcelona HUBc and is part of the CERCA institution of the Generalitat de Catalunya. In 2009 it became one of the first five Spanish research centers accredited as a health research institute by the Carlos III Health Institute. In addition, it is part of the “HR Excellence in Research” program of the European Union and is a member of EATRIS and REGIC. Since 2018, IDIBELL has been an Accredited Center of the AECC Scientific Foundation (FCAECC).
