This Monday a joint scientific session between IDIBELL and the University of Barcelona took place in tribute to Professor Maria Teresa Miras Portugal, who left us last 2021.
The session was followed at the Graus Room Roser Valls of the UB and online through Zoom. Two external guests participated, Dr. Lisardo Boscà, from the CSIC’s Alberto Sols Biomedical Research Institute, in Madrid, and IDIBELL’s first director. The other guest, who did it via Zoom, was Professor Peter Islas from the University of Leipzig in Germany. Doctors Francisco Ciruela and Carles Solsona from the IDIBELL neuroscience program and the University of Barcelona also participated. Finally, Doctors Marçal Pastor Anglada from the IBUB-UB and Rafael Franco from the UB also attended.
Professor Maria Teresa Miras Portugal was a leading scientist in the field of molecular biology and neuropharmacology who was part of the external scientific committee when the Bellvitge Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBELL) was created under the direction of Dr. Lisardo Boscano.
To put the figure of Professor Miras Portugal in context, it should be noted that, among other things, she was a professor at the Complutense University of Madrid, president of the Royal Academy of Pharmacy of Spain, member of the management committees of international scientific societies such as that of Neurochemistry. She organized international scientific congresses.
Professor Miras Portugal had a close scientific relationship with some research groups from IDIBELL and the University of Barcelona that worked and work in the field of purinergic signaling, especially in the field of neurosciences or oncology. This intense relationship has made some of these groups want to organize a scientific session in her memory.
