publishes this week in its Science Careers supplement an
interview with Manel Esteller, director of the Epigenetics and Cancer Biology at Bellvitge Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBELL). The interview, entitled “Opening New Avenues in Epigenetics Research”, is part of the publication of a special on epigenetics in the latest issue of the magazine.
Science is the official magazine of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the largest scientific society in the world and one of the international benchmarks in the dissemination of scientific results. Manel Esteller is one of the world’s most renowned researchers in the field of epigenetics. This discipline studies changes in the expression of genes not found in the DNA sequence and, therefore, they are not inherited. Epigenetics can explain things beyond genetics, such as the fact that two twins with identical genetic material not develop a cancer at the same time. In this sense, the work of Manel Esteller has been instrumental in demonstrating that all human cancers have in common a specific chemical alteration: the hypermethylation of tumour suppressor genes.
Esteller has authored over 200 scientific articles and he is editor of several scientific publications. He has won numerous awards, the last of which was the World Health Summit and Pfizer Award for Innovation in Biomedical Research, received on October.
