Manel Esteller, Director of the Cancer Epigenetics and Biology Program (PEBC) at IDIBELL, Professor of Genetics at the University of Barcelona and ICREA Research Professor, has been elected as member of the European Academy of Cancer Sciences (EACS).

The European Academy of Cancer Sciences (EACS) was launched in September 2009 at the ECCO 15:34th ESMO Multidisciplinary Congress in Berlin, Germany. The Academy began with a Founding Group composed of 114 highly distinguished oncology clinicians and researchers based in 19 European countries and spanning the entire cancer continuum. Since then, a further 82 eminent member have been voted to become Academy members. After this year’s election, consisting of nominations and an online voting system, the Academy now boasts 199 top research and oncology experts.

Hosted under the auspices of the European CanCer Organisation (ECCO), the Academy strives for excellence, independence, leadership, diversity and flexibility. It operates as a ‘virtual’ body, grouping together representatives with outstanding scientific and academic backgrounds from all cancer disciplines to provide knowledgeable and unbiased advice on matters of policy priorities at the national, European and global level. Academy members are responsible for defining the overall objectives of the Academy and addressing issues such as credibility of the institution, membership and governance.
