Javier Magriñá: “Maybe, in the future, robots would be the only workers at operating rooms”

Dr. Magriñá is one of the pioneers in the application of robotic surgery in gynecology. Since 2003, at Mayo Clinic in Arizona, where he works, Dr. Magriñá and his team have been developing surgical techniques with robots to treat a variety of gynecological conditions. The surgeon began working with Zeus robot and then with Da Vinci, the same one that Bellvitge Hospital acquired a year ago.

The surgeon at Mayo Clinic gave an overview of the evolution of robotic surgery from the initial experiences in the early nineties. Magriñá explained that currently in the United States, four in ten gynecologic oncology interventions are performed with robotic surgery. While laparoscopic operations are stable, the growth of robotic surgery is unstoppable. The surgeon compared it with the exponential growth of Internet use and predicted that by 2025 all American hospitals will operate with robots.

Accuracy, safety and cost

Dr. Magriñá summarized in three words the advantages of operating with a robot: “accuracy, safety and cost”, noting that robotic surgery has similar results to those of the traditional laparoscopic technique but it is easier to learn. The surgeon showed some videos of complex gynecological performed with Da Vinci robot. He also examples of other applications of robotics in health care, such as telemedicine, the arrival of the remote visit or medical education, citing nanotechnology techniques that today seem like science fiction but will soon be used in hospitals Such as mitochondrial and genetic surgery.

Javier Magriñá ended his talk by saying that in the future it will be an operating room where the only workers would be robots. Surgeons, anesthesiologists and brass instruments would be remotely controlled from outside the operating room, allowing more accurate, faster and aseptic.
International reference

The course of gynecological surgery to be held in Bellvitge hospital every two years has become an international benchmark in this field. For three days, gynecologists around the world speak about new surgical treatment of gynecological conditions and interventions that can be viewed live from the center hall. The course is led by Jordi Ponce, Chief of Gynecology, Bellvitge Hospital. Dr. Ponce will soon lead a new research group in the IDIBELL robotic surgery
