L\u2019habilitat de retenir durant un per\u00edode de temps breu nova informaci\u00f3 al cervell \u00e9s un recurs molt habitual i necessari per poder fer front a les demandes de la vida quotidiana. Aquesta habilitat, coneguda amb el nom de mem\u00f2ria de treball, ens permet, per exemple, poder retenir breument un n\u00famero de tel\u00e8fon, els noms de persones que acabem de con\u00e8ixer o el cam\u00ed per arribar a un lloc on no hem estat mai abans.<\/p>\n

Ja fa temps que els cient\u00edfics sospiten que la mem\u00f2ria de treball funciona reactivant o repetint la informaci\u00f3 per tal de retenir-la a la ment. Tot i aix\u00ed, aquesta teoria no s\u2019havia pogut demostrar per falta d\u2019instruments de mesura prou precisos. Ara, un grup internacional de neurocient\u00edfics ha aconseguit confirmar la hip\u00f2tesi. Els resultats s\u2019han avan\u00e7at a l\u2019edici\u00f3 digital de la revista nord-americana Current Biology. L\u2019estudi est\u00e0 coordinat per Llu\u00eds Fuentemilla, investigador del Grup de Cognici\u00f3 i Plasticitat Cerebral de l\u2019Institut d\u2019Investigaci\u00f3 Biom\u00e8dica de Bellvitge (IDIBELL) i de la Universitat de Barcelona (UB).<\/p>\n

Els investigadors han realitzat un experiment amb vuit adults sans, a qui se\u2019ls feia veure diferents imatges i recordar-ne alguns detalls. Mitjan\u00e7ant l\u2019\u00fas d\u2019una t\u00e8cnica de registre d’activitat neuronal d\u2019\u00faltima generaci\u00f3 anomenada magnetoencefalografia juntament amb el desenvolupament de nous m\u00e8todes d’an\u00e0lisi els autors de l\u2019estudi van poder descodificar, mil\u00b7lisegon a mil\u00b7lisegon, l\u2019activitat del cervell dels participants associada al manteniment de les imatges en mem\u00f2ria.<\/p>\n

Oscil\u00b7lacions theta<\/span><\/p>\n

Els investigadors van trobar evid\u00e8ncies que la informaci\u00f3 es repetia de forma cont\u00ednua a la ment. Tamb\u00e9 van identificar que el mecanisme neural responsable de coordinar aquesta repetici\u00f3 eren unes oscil\u00b7lacions r\u00edtmiques cerebrals anomenades oscil\u00b7lacions theta, que es produeixen a una freq\u00fc\u00e8ncia d\u2019entre 4 i 8 hertzs.<\/p>\n

Aquests resultats demostren per primer cop que la mem\u00f2ria de treball est\u00e0 relacionada amb la repetici\u00f3 peri\u00f2dica d\u2019informaci\u00f3 en el cervell i que els mecanismes que coordinen aquesta repetici\u00f3 de forma peri\u00f2dica milloren la precisi\u00f3 de la mem\u00f2ria de treball.<\/p>\n
