La Societat Espanyola de Gen\u00e8tica<\/span><\/a> (SEG) i la Fundaci\u00f3 Pryconsa han distingit les contribucions del director del Programa d\u2019Epigen\u00e8tica i Biologia del C\u00e0ncer de l\u2019IDIBELL, Manel Esteller, en la recerca en aplicacions de la gen\u00e8tica en la III Edici\u00f3 dels Premis Nacionals de Gen\u00e8tica que s\u2019entregaran en el marc del XXXVIII Congr\u00e9s de la SEG que se celebra del 21 al 23 de setembre a M\u00farcia.<\/strong> Perfil de Manel Esteller<\/strong> Doctor en Medicina per la Universitat de Barcelona, \u00e9s autor de m\u00e9s de dos-cents articles cient\u00edfics, membre de nombroses societats cient\u00edfiques internacionals i d\u2019editorials, i revisor de diverses publicacions. Actualment ostenta el c\u00e0rrec de president de l\u2019Epigenetics Society. <\/p>\n Nascut a Sant Boi de Llobregat l\u2019any 1968, Manel Esteller \u00e9s un referent internacional en l\u2019\u00e0mbit de l\u2019epigen\u00e8tica. Es va llicenciar en medicina a la Universitat de Barcelona l\u2019any 1992, on es va doctorar l\u2019any 1996 amb un treball sobre la gen\u00e8tica molecular del carcinoma d\u2019endometri. De l\u2019any 1997 al 2001 va fer els estudis de postdoctorat a la Johns Hopkins University (Baltimore, Estats Units), on va estudiar la relaci\u00f3 entre la metilaci\u00f3 de l\u2019ADN i el c\u00e0ncer. De fet, el seu treball ha estat decisiu per demostrar que tots els tumors humans tenen en com\u00fa una alteraci\u00f3 qu\u00edmica concreta: la hipermetilaci\u00f3 dels gens supressors de tumors. <\/p>\n Les seves aportacions, de notable originalitat, contribueixen a revisar i complementar paradigmes cient\u00edfics que es creien ben establerts, en demostrar la import\u00e0ncia de factors externs en la modificaci\u00f3 directa de gens amb efectes per a la seva regulaci\u00f3. La seva obra cient\u00edfica, de gran extensi\u00f3 malgrat la seva joventut, demostra com les modificacions epigen\u00e8tiques del material hereditari poden contribuir al desenvolupament dels processos d’envelliment i c\u00e0ncer. <\/strong> El jurat, encap\u00e7alat per la presidenta de l\u2019associaci\u00f3, Montserrat Aguad\u00e9, catedr\u00e0tica de Gen\u00e8tica de la Universitat de Barcelona<\/span><\/a> i guardonada a la passada edici\u00f3 d\u2019aquests premis, ha premiat Esteller per \u201cla seva excel\u00b7lent tasca investigadora que ha posat de manifest la import\u00e0ncia de les modificacions epigen\u00e8tiques en la regulaci\u00f3 de l\u2019expressi\u00f3 g\u00e8nica tant en processos fisiol\u00f2gics com patol\u00f2gics. Els resultats de les seves investigacions pre-cl\u00edniques estan contribuint al desenvolupament de nous f\u00e0rmacs per a la seva aplicaci\u00f3 en el tractament del c\u00e0ncer\u201d. <\/p>\n
<\/strong> Manel Esteller \u00e9s director del programa d\u2019Epigen\u00e8tica i Biologia del C\u00e0ncer de l\u2019IDIBELL, professor d\u2019investigaci\u00f3 ICREA<\/span><\/a> (Instituci\u00f3 Catalana de Recerca i Estudis Avan\u00e7ats) i professor associat a la Universitat de Barcelona. Abans de la seva incorporaci\u00f3 a l\u2019IDIBELL, Esteller va liderar el Laboratori d\u2019Epigen\u00e8tica del C\u00e0ncer del Centre Nacional d\u2019Investigacions Oncol\u00f2giques (CNIO)<\/span><\/a>. <\/p>\n
