L\u2019Institut d\u2019Investigaci\u00f3 Biom\u00e8dica de Bellvitge (IDIBELL) va contractar, a final del 2011, l\u2019investigador George Thomas, un dels principals cient\u00edfics internacionals en l\u2019\u00e0mbit del c\u00e0ncer i les malalties metab\u00f2liques. La investigaci\u00f3 del doctor Thomas se centra en els processos metab\u00f2lics que es troben rere les malalties humanes, la qual cosa l\u2019ha dut a realitzar troballes en malalties aparentment tan diferents com el c\u00e0ncer, la diabetis i l\u2019obesitat.<\/p>\n
George Thomas ha estat reconegut per la comunitat cient\u00edfica com un l\u00edder innovador en el camp de la transducci\u00f3 de senyals i el control del creixement cel\u00b7lular, a partir dels seus estudis sobre la regulaci\u00f3 de la prote\u00efna-cinasa S6 (S6K1). El grup liderat pel doctor Thomas va descobrir que la S6K1 est\u00e0 regulada per la fosforilaci\u00f3 (l\u2019addici\u00f3 d\u2019un grup qu\u00edmic de fosfat), cosa que va permetre demostrar els processos fonamentals que ocorren dins de la c\u00e8l\u00b7lula associada amb la generaci\u00f3 d\u2019energia a trav\u00e9s dels nutrients.<\/p>\n
El doctor Thomas ha publicat m\u00e9s de cent articles en revistes cient\u00edfiques de m\u00e0xim nivell, entre les quals Nature<\/em>, Science<\/em> i Cell<\/em>. El Dr. Thomas i la doctora Sara Kozma, la seva estreta col\u00b7laboradora, que tamb\u00e9 s\u2019ha incorporat a l\u2019IDIBELL, han demostrat que la S6K1 juga un paper clau en el creixement cel\u00b7lular, l\u2019equilibri d\u2019energia i la biologia de c\u00e8l\u00b7lules mare, processos que es troben alterats en moltes malalties. A m\u00e9s de la doctora Kozma, s\u2019ha incorporat a aquest equip el professor Albert Tauler, de la Universitat de Barcelona, entitat s\u00f2cia de l\u2019IDIBELL. El doctor Tauler t\u00e9 una \u00e0mplia experi\u00e8ncia en recerca en gen\u00e8tica del c\u00e0ncer.<\/p>\n En estudis recents, els doctors Thomas i Kozma han demostrat que la S6K1 est\u00e0 implicada en la sensibilitat a la insulina i la formaci\u00f3 de greix. Aquests estudis han revolucionat el nostre coneixement de les vies de transducci\u00f3 de senyals i els processos que condueixen a l\u2019aparici\u00f3 de moltes malalties. El treball del grup del doctor Thomas ha perm\u00e8s el desenvolupament de nous f\u00e0rmacs contra el c\u00e0ncer, alguns dels quals s\u2019estan aplicant en la pr\u00e0ctica cl\u00ednica i altres estan en fase de proves en assaigs cl\u00ednics. Aquests \u00faltims estudis s\u2019estan desenvolupant amb el doctor Tauler.<\/p>\n Per a l\u2019investigador nord-americ\u00e0, \u00abl\u2019IDIBELL ofereix una gran oportunitat per passar a la pr\u00e0ctica cl\u00ednica els aven\u00e7os desenvolupats al laboratori\u00bb. George Thomas destaca el potencial de l\u2019entorn de Bellvitge, amb dos grans hospitals, quatre facultats universit\u00e0ries, un centre de recerca i instal\u00b7lacions per a empreses biom\u00e8diques al parc empresarial Biopol\u2019H.<\/p>\n Abans d\u2019arribar a l\u2019IDIBELL, el doctor Thomas va ocupar el c\u00e0rrec de director cient\u00edfic de l\u2019Institut de Malalties Metab\u00f2liques de la Universitat de Cincinnati, on va ocupar la c\u00e0tedra John and Gladys en biologia del c\u00e0ncer. Pr\u00e8viament, va dirigir un grup de recerca a l\u2019Institut de Recerca Biom\u00e8dica Friedrich Miescher de Basilea (Su\u00efssa). L\u2019arribada del Dr. Thomas a IDIBELL ha perm\u00e8s a la instituci\u00f3 establir vincles de col\u00b7laboraci\u00f3 amb la Universitat de Cincinnati.<\/p>\n La contractaci\u00f3 de George Thomas va comportar per l\u2019IDIBELL m\u00e9s de dos anys de negociacions. Finalment, l\u2019arribada de l\u2019investigador va ser possible gr\u00e0cies al finan\u00e7ament de l\u2019Institut de Salut Carlos III del Govern espanyol, a trav\u00e9s del programa de centres d\u2019investigaci\u00f3 sanit\u00e0ria acreditats. La comissi\u00f3 de selecci\u00f3 de l\u2019Institut de Salut Carlos III va valorar la sol\u00b7licitud amb un excel\u00b7lent \u00abper presentar uns objectius originals i innovadors que donaran lloc a resultats altament rellevants en la tem\u00e0tica abordada i amb un clar potencial translacional\u00bb.
