L\u2019estrogen \u00e9s una hormona femenina essencial que compleix moltes funcions b\u00e0siques en l\u2019organisme. No obstant aix\u00f2, en certes ocasions tamb\u00e9 pot originar o afavorir el creixement d’alguns tipus de c\u00e0ncer, com ara el de mama, ja qu\u00e8 estimula el creixement i la divisi\u00f3 de les c\u00e8l\u00b7lules tumorals. <\/p>\n

Els tumors que responen a l\u2019estrogen es coneixen com a \u201cpositius pel receptor d\u2019estrogen\u201d i es combaten, entre d\u2019altres, amb l\u2019administraci\u00f3 de f\u00e0rmacs \u201canti-estrog\u00e8nics\u201d. Aquest tipus de tumors en donen en aproximadament dos ter\u00e7os del total de pacients. En molts d\u2019aquests casos, per\u00f2, el tumor, que inicialment respon al tractament, acaba fent-se resistent, el que provoca la progressi\u00f3 del c\u00e0ncer.<\/p>\n

Un estudi internacional liderat per la Unitat de C\u00e0ncer de Mama i el Laboratori de Recerca Translacional de l\u2019ICO-IDIBELL que es publica a Breast Cancer Research<\/em> ha analitzat els mecanismes moleculars que faciliten la resist\u00e8ncia de les c\u00e8l\u00b7lules cancer\u00edgenes a les ter\u00e0pies anti-estrog\u00e8niques. <\/p>\n

El treball, encap\u00e7alat per Miquel \u00c0ngel Pujana, ha identificat la activitat de la prote\u00efna VAV3 com clau en aquest proc\u00e9s. Segons l\u2019estudi, baixos nivells d\u2019expressi\u00f3 de VAV3 comporten una millor resposta a la ter\u00e0pia hormonal (e.g. basada en tamoxif\u00e8), mentre que una elevada expressi\u00f3 s\u2019associa a una pitjor resposta. A m\u00e9s han identificat variants gen\u00e8tiques en el gen que codifica per VAV3 que prediuen la resposta a la ter\u00e0pia. Segons aix\u00f2, disminuir el nivell d\u2019expressi\u00f3 o activitat de VAV3 seria una bona estrat\u00e8gia per evitar la resist\u00e8ncia als tractaments anti-estr\u00f2genics.
