La aparici\u00f3n de un tumor es un proceso complejo en el que la c\u00e9lula adquiere alteraciones gen\u00e9ticas o epigen\u00e9ticas que le confieren ventajas respeto a las c\u00e9lulas normales porque se reproducen m\u00e1s r\u00e1pidamente, se extienden por el organismo y son resistentes a los mecanismos naturales de muerte programada celular (apoptosis). Por eso es por lo que, en un entorno propicio, las c\u00e9lulas tumorales son inmortales.<\/p>\n

La apoptosis o muerte programada de las c\u00e9lulas es consecuencia de la actividad en cadena de varias prote\u00ednas. Este proceso autodestructivo natural, necesario para la supervivencia del organismo, se inicia en las mitocondrias (elementos que producen energ\u00eda adentro de las c\u00e9lulas), mediante la acci\u00f3n de unas prote\u00ednas denominadas Bax y Bak, de la familia Bcl-2. Las alteraciones de estas prote\u00ednas son comunes en el c\u00e1ncer.<\/p>\n

Los investigadores part\u00edan de la hip\u00f3tesis de que la falta de glucosa ocasionar\u00eda la muerte por necrosis (muerte celular provocada por una lesi\u00f3n y que acostumbra a provocar un proceso inflamatorio) de las c\u00e9lulas tumorales con alteraciones en las prote\u00ednas Bcl-2. Sorprendentemente, el estudio ha demostrado que la muerte se produce a trav\u00e9s de una forma no convencional de apoptosis, activada por una enzima denominada caspasa-8.<\/p>\n

Los resultados de la investigaci\u00f3n ofrecen una nueva perspectiva del mecanismo de muerte celular provocado por la falta de nutrientes y obro la puerta a nuevas estrat\u00e9gicas terap\u00e9uticas contra el c\u00e1ncer mediante el uso de inhibidores del metabolismo de la glucosa.<\/p>\n

El primer firmante del trabajo es Alfredo Caro-Maldonado. El estudio ha sido coordinado por Cristina Mu\u00f1oz-Pinedo y ha contado con la participaci\u00f3n de Isabel Fabregat y S\u00edlvia Ram\u00edrez-Peinado. En el trabajo tambi\u00e9n han participado grupos de investigaci\u00f3n del Centro Mediterr\u00e1neo de Medicina Molecular del Inserm de Niza (Francia) y del St Jude Children\u2019s Research Hospital de Memphis (Estados Unidos).<\/p>\n
