Un estudio publicado a la revista Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) muestra un mecanismo que explica las propiedades comunes que comparten c\u00e9lulas madre y c\u00e9lulas cancerosas. En el trabajo ha participado el Grupo de Investigaci\u00f3n de Epigen\u00e8tica del C\u00e1ncer, dirigido por Manel Esteller, investigador ICREA del IDIBELL y del Departamento de Ciencias Fisiol\u00f3gicas II de la Facultad de Medicina de la Universidad de Barcelona (UB).<\/span>
\u00abConcretamente hemos encontrado que una prote\u00edna implicada en el aumento de la longevidad, llamada sirtu\u00efna 1 (SIRT1), es muy activa en las c\u00e9lulas madre, que por definici\u00f3n son siempre j\u00f3venes\u00bb, explica Esteller. Cuando las c\u00e9lulas madre empiezan a diferenciarse para generar los diferentes tejidos, la actividad de la sirtuina 1 se pierde. Seg\u00fan apunta el investigador, \u00abeste proceso es muy similar al que pasa en el c\u00e1ncer: los tumores humanos tienen muy activada la sirtuina 1 porque son c\u00e9lulas inmortales y poco diferenciadas\u00bb.<\/p>\n

Los resultados indican que la SIRT1 est\u00e1 regulada durante la diferenciaci\u00f3n de las c\u00e9lulas madre por alguna v\u00eda epigen\u00e9tica, todav\u00eda desconocida, que controla el desarrollo espec\u00edfico en las c\u00e9lulas madre embrionarias. Uno de los intereses adicionales del estudio es que ya existen substancias que, como m\u00ednimo en el laboratorio, pueden modificar el proceso: estimular la diferenciaci\u00f3n de c\u00e9lulas madre y tener efectos antitumorales, al provocar el envejecimiento repentino de las c\u00e9lulas cancerosas.<\/p>\n
