Araque ha demostrado que los astrocitos del hipocampo, la regi\u00f3n cerebral implicada en procesos de memoria y aprendizaje, pueden liberar un neurotransmisor: el glutamato, que potencia la transmisi\u00f3n nerviosa de las neuronas. Participando as\u00ed en una sinapsis tripartita \u201cel astrocito no regula la conversaci\u00f3n entre neuronas, participa activamente de ella. Es una conversaci\u00f3n a tres bandas\u201d explica el investigador.
Seg\u00fan Araque, profundizar en el conocimiento de la funci\u00f3n de la red neuroglial es s\u00f3lo \u201cun primer paso para entender las enfermedades neurodegenerativas como el Alzheimer o el Parkinson, descubrir si los astrocitos est\u00e1n implicados en estas patolog\u00edas e investigar si pueden ser \u00fatiles a la hora de implantar nuevas terapias\u201d.
El Dr. Alfonso Araque obtuvo su doctorado bajo la supervisi\u00f3n del neurofisi\u00f3logo espa\u00f1ol Dr. Washington Bu\u00f1o en el Instituto Cajal de Madrid. Su trabajo se orient\u00f3 fundamentalmente a la comprensi\u00f3n del equilibrio entre las sinapsis excitadoras e inhibidoras que regulan la actividad motora del cangrejo de r\u00edo. En los noventa se traslad\u00f3 al laboratorio del Dr. Philip Haydon en Iowa, donde comenz\u00f3 a trabajar con la interacci\u00f3n de los astrocitos y las sinapsis. Desde este laboratorio se ha lanzado la hip\u00f3tesis de la sinapsis tripartita, en la que los astrocitos podr\u00edan participar en el proceso de codificaci\u00f3n de la transmisi\u00f3n sin\u00e1ptica.
