Marta Mart\u00ednez y su grupo han analizado el proceso de macroautofagia y han llegado a la conclusi\u00f3n que en pacientes de la enfermedad de Huntington se produce una mutaci\u00f3n en la prote\u00edna Hungtintina que impide el reconocimiento selectivo de elementos citos\u00f3licos (especialmente mitocondrias da\u00f1adas) por parte de las vacuolas autof\u00e1gicas encargadas de destruirlos. De forma que no pueden atravesar la membrana y se van acumulando dentro la c\u00e9lula neuronal. Seg\u00fan la investigadora el reto ahora es \u201cdescubrir y probar nuevos f\u00e1rmacos inductores de la autofagia como la Rapamicina para generar nuevos tratamientos contra las enfermedades neurodegenerativas\u201d. Mart\u00ednez Vicente es doctora en Bioqu\u00edmica por la Universidad de Valencia, y actualmente investigadora postdoctoral en el laboratorio de investigaci\u00f3n de enfermedades neurodegenerativas del Instituto de Investigaci\u00f3n Vall d\u2019Hebr\u00f3n.
