Desde hace a\u00f1os se conocen dos genes, el BRCA1 y el BRCA2 que, cuando est\u00e1n mutados, aumentan mucho el riesgo de sufrir un c\u00e1ncer de mama. Estos genes, sin embargo, s\u00f3lo explican un 30% de los tumores de mama hereditarios. Por eso, en muchas familias que presentan diversos casos de tumor de mama no se sabe qu\u00e9 alteraci\u00f3n provoca el aumento del riesgo. Esto hace que no se pueda identificar a
los individuos concretos que tienen m\u00e1s predisposici\u00f3n al c\u00e1ncer para hacerles un seguimiento m\u00e1s estrecho y aplicarles medidas de prevenci\u00f3n.
Una de las l\u00edneas de investigaci\u00f3n del LRT y de los Programas ICO mencionados es identificar nuevos genes implicados en el c\u00e1ncer de mama. En un estudio coordinado por el jefe del grupo de investigaci\u00f3n de c\u00e1ncer de mama, Miguel \u00c1ngel Pujana, y publicado en la revista Breast Cancer Research, se ha estudiado una v\u00eda de se\u00f1alizaci\u00f3n implicada en este tipo de c\u00e1ncer y relacionada con la reparaci\u00f3n de da\u00f1os en el ADN. Mediante t\u00e9cnicas de prote\u00f3mica se han identificado nuevas prote\u00ednas relacionadas con esta v\u00eda y, posteriormente, se han analizado los genes correspondientes por su papel en la susceptibilidad del c\u00e1ncer. En un estudio sobre m\u00e1s de 9.000 personas que presentan una mutaci\u00f3n en los genes BRCA1 o BRCA2 (400 de los cuales eran pacientes del ICO) los investigadores han visto que variantes gen\u00e9ticas del gen MORF4L1 podr\u00edan modificar el riesgo de sufrir c\u00e1ncer relacionado con BRCA2; es decir, a las personas con BRCA2 mutado, el c\u00e1ncer de mama les aparecer\u00e1 antes o despu\u00e9s en funci\u00f3n de la variante del gen MORF4L1 que tengan. A partir de ahora, los cient\u00edficos esperan repetir los an\u00e1lisis con m\u00e1s casos para confirmar los resultados y expandir el estudio al resto de genes identificados.
