Descubren un mecanismo que explica c\u00f3mo las c\u00e9lulas tumorales se extienden a \u00f3rganos y estructuras vecinas, iniciando la met\u00e1stasis La aparici\u00f3n de met\u00e1stasis es la responsable del 90% de muertes en pacientes con c\u00e1ncer. De manera que entender los mecanismos responsables de este proceso es uno de los objetivos m\u00e1ximos de la investigaci\u00f3n del c\u00e1ncer. El proceso de met\u00e1stasis consiste en una serie de pasos encadenados donde el tumor primario invade tejidos vecinos y acaba diseminando por todo el organismo. Uno de los primeros tejidos que sufren la met\u00e1stasis son los ganglios linf\u00e1ticos que rodean al tumor.<\/p>\n

Un estudio liderado por el investigador del IDIBELL, Manel Esteller, publicado en la prestigiosa revista The Journal of Pathology<\/em><\/a> identifica un mecanismo que explica como las c\u00e9lulas tumorales se escapan desde su lugar original a los ganglios linf\u00e1ticos. Las investigaciones desarrolladas han permitido descubrir que las c\u00e9lulas tumorales metast\u00e1ticas que crecen en los ganglios linf\u00e1ticos de los pacientes con melanoma y tumores de cabeza y cuello pierden la actividad de una prote\u00edna denominada Caderina-11. La funci\u00f3n normal de esta prote\u00edna es actuar como el ancla de un barco para fijar las c\u00e9lulas en una posici\u00f3n concreta y evitar que se muevan. La inactivaci\u00f3n de gen de la Caderina-11 provoca que se pierda esta fijaci\u00f3n y las c\u00e9lulas tumorales \u201csaltan\u201d a \u00f3rganos y estructuras vecinas, como lo son los ganglios linf\u00e1ticos.<\/p>\n

El trabajo de The Journal of Pathology <\/em>es un ejemplo de investigaci\u00f3n traslacional y multidisciplinaria, que ha implicado a los laboratorios de investigaci\u00f3n b\u00e1sica, al servicio de oncolog\u00eda m\u00e9dica del Instituto Catal\u00e1n de Oncolog\u00eda<\/span><\/a> (ICO) y al servicio de Anatom\u00eda Patol\u00f3gica del Hospital Universitario de Bellvitge<\/span><\/a>. El estudio coordinado por el director del Programa de Epigen\u00e9tica y Biolog\u00eda del C\u00e1ncer del IDIBELL, investigador ICREA<\/a> y profesor de la Universidad de Barcelona<\/span><\/a>, Manel Esteller, tambi\u00e9n propone que el proceso puede ser reversible ya que, en modelos in vitro<\/em> e in vivo<\/em>, la recuperaci\u00f3n de la actividad de la prote\u00edna Caderina-11 caus\u00f3 un enlentecimiento del crecimiento tumoral y una disminuci\u00f3n de la capacidad de generar met\u00e1stasis.<\/p>\n

Esta posibilidad necesita ser estudiada en ensayos cl\u00ednicos internacionales, pero es un punto de partida prometedor en el estudio de la biolog\u00eda de la met\u00e1stasis y de c\u00f3mo actuar terap\u00e9uticamente en esta \u00e1rea.<\/p>\n
