Un estudio liderado por Manel Esteller ha descubierto la existencia de una mol\u00e9cula antitumoral que se origina dentro de un oncog\u00e9n Un punto en com\u00fan en todos los tumores humanos es que producen una activaci\u00f3n de los oncogenes, genes causantes de c\u00e1ncer, y provocan una p\u00e9rdida de la funci\u00f3n de los genes protectores, denominados antioncogenes o genes supresores tumorales. Normalmente ambas categor\u00edas de genes, procancerosos y anticancerosos, se encuentran en regiones distintas de nuestros cromosomas. Un estudio coordinado por Manel Esteller, director del programa de epigen\u00e9tica y biolog\u00eda del c\u00e1ncer del Instituto de Investigaci\u00f3n Biom\u00e9dica de Bellvitge (IDIBELL), profesor de gen\u00e9tica de la Universidad de Barcelona e Investigador ICREA, ha descubierto la existencia de una mol\u00e9cula antitumoral que se origina dentro de un oncog\u00e9n. El hallazgo se publica esta semana en la revista cient\u00edfica Nature Structural & Molecular Biology.<\/em><\/p>\n

El antioncog\u00e9n identificado es un \u00e1cido ribonucleico largo no codificante (lncRNA), es decir, una mol\u00e9cula que no produce prote\u00ednas ella misma sino que se encarga de regular la expresi\u00f3n de otras prote\u00ednas. En concreto, la mol\u00e9cula identificada se fabrica dentro de un gen que causa c\u00e1ncer (SMYD3) por lo que su funci\u00f3n en c\u00e9lulas sanas consiste en inhibir la acci\u00f3n pro-cancerosa del oncog\u00e9n.<\/p>\n

Si se introduce este fragmento de \u00e1cido ribonucleico a c\u00e9lulas cancerosas que crecen en el laboratorio o a tumores humanos implantados en animales de investigaci\u00f3n es capaz de bloquear el crecimiento del c\u00e1ncer. \u201cCreemos que este descubrimiento ser\u00e1 el punto de partida para encontrar muchos otros oncogenes y antioncogenes que cohabitan en regiones de nuestro genoma y que, cuando su convivencia se deteriora, contribuyen al desarrollo de tumores humanos\u201d, comenta el Dr. Esteller.<\/p>\n
