Las c\u00e9lulas sanas viven en un delicado equilibrio entre los genes que promueven el crecimiento (oncogenes) y los que lo frenan (antioncogenes o genes supresores tumorales). Este equilibrio se rompe en las c\u00e9lulas tumorales. Las causas son muchas, como por ejemplo, la existencia de mutaciones, pero destaca la adquisici\u00f3n de una se\u00f1al qu\u00edmica, la metilaci\u00f3n, que bloquea la actividad de los genes que frenan el c\u00e1ncer. Se desconoce, sin embargo, qu\u00e9 sucede en las c\u00e9lulas una vez han adquirido esta alteraci\u00f3n epigen\u00e9tica.<\/p>\n

Los investigadores observaron que genes protectores de c\u00e1ncer como el receptor de la vitamina A ve\u00edan alterada su actividad en c\u00e9lulas de c\u00e1ncer de colon por la presencia de estas estructuras esf\u00e9ricas formadas por ADN (en este caso regiones reguladoras de la expresi\u00f3n de genes) y unas prote\u00ednas llamadas histonas.<\/p>\n

\u00abHemos observado\u00bb, explic\u00f3 el investigador Manel Esteller, \u00abque f\u00e1rmacos epigen\u00e9ticos, capaces de desmetilar el ADN, aprobados para pacientes de un subtipo de leucemia, son tambi\u00e9n capaces de eliminar estas ‘pelotas’ de los genes antitumorales modo que \u00e9stos vuelven a expresarse y recuperan su funci\u00f3n\u00bb.<\/p>\n

Este estudio, seg\u00fan dijo Esteller, tambi\u00e9n ha servido para descubrir nuevos genes inhibidores del c\u00e1ncer.<\/p>\n

El descubrimiento aumenta el conocimiento molecular de las causas del c\u00e1ncer y, en cuanto a la aplicaci\u00f3n cl\u00ednica del hallazgo, Esteller ha explicado que \u00abactualmente existe un amplio abanico de f\u00e1rmacos en desarrollo precl\u00ednico capaces de expulsar los nucleosomas de los lugares aberrantes del genoma\u00bb.<\/p>\n
