La revista PLoS ONE ha publicado esta semana un estudio liderado por la investigadora Laura Valle, del Programa de C\u00e1ncer Hereditario ICO-IDIBELL, donde demuestran que la presencia de tel\u00f3meros m\u00e1s largos se asocia con mayor riesgo a desarrollar c\u00e1ncer en casos hereditarios de c\u00e1ncer colorrectal sin causa gen\u00e9tica identificada.<\/p>\n
En el estudio han participado varios miembros del Programa de C\u00e1ncer Hereditario y de la Unidad de Biomarcadores y Susceptibilidad del ICO-IDIBELL.<\/p>\n
Los tel\u00f3meros son regiones de ADN no codificante localizadas en los extremos de los cromosomas y su funci\u00f3n principal es la estabilidad estructural de los cromosomas.<\/p>\n
Este estudio est\u00e1 estrechamente relacionado con otro trabajo realizado por el mismo grupo y publicado recientemente donde mostraban que en familias con s\u00edndrome de Lynch (c\u00e1ncer colorrectal hereditario y mutaciones en genes reparadores del ADN), los portadores de mutaci\u00f3n que hab\u00edan desarrollado c\u00e1ncer presentaban tel\u00f3meros m\u00e1s cortos y un acortamiento de los tel\u00f3meros asociado a la edad m\u00e1s acelerado. Con estos datos han podido concluir que el efecto de la longitud telom\u00e9rica sobre el riesgo de desarrollar c\u00e1ncer en familias con c\u00e1ncer colorrectal es dependiente del estado del sistema de reparaci\u00f3n del ADN que se encuentra alterado en el s\u00edndrome de Lynch e intacto en otros casos hereditarios. Adem\u00e1s, \u00e9ste ha sido el primer estudio en evaluar la asociaci\u00f3n entre el acortamiento telom\u00e9rico y la anticipaci\u00f3n gen\u00e9tica observada en las familias con s\u00edndrome de Lynch, descartando este mecanismo como causa de la anticipaci\u00f3n; una hip\u00f3tesis que se hab\u00eda barajado durante a\u00f1os por la comunidad cient\u00edfica. El estudio de los tel\u00f3meros y la asociaci\u00f3n con el riesgo a desarrollar c\u00e1ncer en este tipo de familias tambi\u00e9n incluye otro estudio liderado por el mismo equipo y que cont\u00f3 con la colaboraci\u00f3n de un grupo holand\u00e9s, donde identifican una variante gen\u00e9tica com\u00fan en el gen de la telomerasa (enzima responsable del alargamiento de los tel\u00f3meros) como modificadora del riesgo a desarrollar c\u00e1ncer en pacientes j\u00f3venes con s\u00edndrome de Lynch.<\/p>\n
