La aparici\u00f3n de met\u00e1stasis es responsable del 90% de muertes en pacientes con c\u00e1ncer, por lo que entender los mecanismos responsables de este proceso es uno de los objetivos principales de la investigaci\u00f3n del c\u00e1ncer. El proceso de met\u00e1stasis consiste en una serie de pasos encadenados en los que el tumor primario invade tejidos vecinos y acaba disemin\u00e1ndose por todo el organismo.
\nUn art\u00edculo publicado hoy en la revista Molecular Cell con la colaboraci\u00f3n del grupo de Manel Esteller, Director del Programa de Epigen\u00e9tica y Biolog\u00eda del C\u00e1ncer del Instituto de Investigaciones Biom\u00e9dicas de Bellvitge (IDIBELL), Investigador ICREA y Profesor de Gen\u00e9tica de la Universidad de Barcelona, \u200b\u200bdescribe una de las claves para entender la met\u00e1stasis en c\u00e1ncer de mama.<\/p>\n
La investigaci\u00f3n demuestra que en un 15% de tumores de mama existe un n\u00famero excesivo de copias del gen EMSY en el material gen\u00e9tico de las pacientes lo que induce la p\u00e9rdida de factores protectores de met\u00e1stasis. El trabajo dirigido desde la Universidad de Cambridge es un ejemplo de investigaci\u00f3n traslacional y multidisciplinaria, y en el que han colaborado, adem\u00e1s del grupo de Manel Esteller, el laboratorio de Alberto Villanueva del Instituto Catal\u00e1n de Oncolog\u00eda-Instituto de Investigaciones Biom\u00e9dicas de Bellvitge (IDIBELL). Seg\u00fan el estudio, aquellos tumores de mama con copias extras del gen EMSY en su genoma son capaces de reclutar a m\u00faltiples mol\u00e9culas para apagar la actividad de genes anti-mest\u00e1stasis como el denominado microRNA-31. Los investigadores tambi\u00e9n comprobaron que si consegu\u00edan disminuir la funci\u00f3n de EMSY, los factores protectores de met\u00e1stasis volv\u00edan a activarse y no se produc\u00eda la diseminaci\u00f3n del tumor.
\n\u201cEste \u00faltimo hallazgo podr\u00eda despertar el inter\u00e9s en buscar f\u00e1rmacos capaces de bloquear a la prote\u00edna EMS\u201d comenta Esteller. \u201cAdem\u00e1s en este caso\u201d a\u00f1ade el investigador \u201cser\u00eda m\u00e1s f\u00e1cil identificar las pacientes que podr\u00edan ser sensibles al f\u00e1rmaco ya que en principio ser\u00edan aquellas que presentaran una sobredosis de este oncog\u00e9n EMSY en el an\u00e1lisis gen\u00e9tico. Ser\u00eda un proceso similar al que ya se realiza para la detecci\u00f3n del marcador HER2 en c\u00e1ncer de mama que permite su tratamiento con un f\u00e1rmaco espec\u00edfico\u201d.<\/p>\n
