El c\u00e1ncer de mama es el m\u00e1s frecuente en mujeres. Una de cada nueve sufrir\u00e1 un c\u00e1ncer de mama a lo largo de su vida. Los progresos en la prevenci\u00f3n y la detecci\u00f3n precoz, as\u00ed como el uso de la quimioterapia despu\u00e9s de la cirug\u00eda (quimioterapia adyuvante), han conseguido en los \u00faltimos diez a\u00f1os incrementar significativamente la supervivencia en esta enfermedad, pero a\u00fan queda mucho por hacer.
La identificaci\u00f3n de pacientes con c\u00e1ncer de mama de alto riesgo es clave para saber si una paciente requerir\u00e1 \u00fanicamente la extirpaci\u00f3n del tumor o si ser\u00e1 necesaria la quimioterapia adicional para estar seguros de la eliminaci\u00f3n de las c\u00e9lulas cancerosas mamarias. Actualmente, se determinan las mutaciones gen\u00e9ticas y patrones de expresi\u00f3n ya conocidos, pero el rompecabezas de la gen\u00e9tica de la enfermedad permanece en buena parte inacabado.
El director del Programa de Epigen\u00e9tica y Biolog\u00eda del C\u00e1ncer (PEBC) del Instituto de Investigaci\u00f3n Biom\u00e9dica de Bellvitge (IDIBELL), Profesor de Gen\u00e9tica de la Universidad de Barcelona e Investigador ICREA, Manel Esteller, ha establecido los patrones epigen\u00e9ticos del c\u00e1ncer de mama y tambi\u00e9n sus consecuencias cl\u00ednicas. El hallazgo se publica en la revista Molecular Oncology.
\u00abHemos analizado las alteraciones epigen\u00e9ticas, concretamente la se\u00f1al qu\u00edmica llamado metilaci\u00f3n del ADN en 500 tumores de mama y hemos comparado los patrones obtenidos con el comportamiento cl\u00ednico de estos c\u00e1nceres\u00bb explica Esteller.

\u00abObservamos que hay dos subgrupos de tumores de mama seg\u00fan su epigenoma: uno que hemos llamado Epi-Basal, caracterizado por la p\u00e9rdida de marcas epigen\u00e9ticas que causa roturas en los cromosomas, y otro que hemos llamado Epi-Luminal B, que presenta inactivaci\u00f3n epigen\u00e9tica de genes importantes que deber\u00edan protegernos del c\u00e1ncer y estas c\u00e9lulas alteradas ya no pueden hacerlo\u201d
Seg\u00fan el investigador lo m\u00e1s destacado del hallazgo \u00abes que el subtipo Epi-Luminal B se comporta de forma especialmente agresiva, y est\u00e1 asociado a una supervivencia menor de las pacientes. Esto puede ser \u00fatil para recomendar que en estos tumores no nos conformemos con la cirug\u00eda y determinar que probablemente ser\u00e1 necesario administrar quimioterapia complementaria. Dicho de otro modo, en aquellos tumores con patr\u00f3n epigen\u00e9tico m\u00e1s ‘benigno’, la cirug\u00eda podr\u00eda por s\u00ed sola ser curativa; evitando as\u00ed los efectos secundarios de la quimioterapia\u00bb concluye el investigador.
