Los receptores ionotr\u00f3picos de glutamato desempe\u00f1an numerosas funciones en el funcionamiento fisiol\u00f3gico de las sinapsis, y su desregulaci\u00f3n est\u00e1 asociada a m\u00faltiples condiciones neuropatol\u00f3gicas. Cada vez existen m\u00e1s evidencias que indican que las subclases de estos receptores (NMDA, AMPA o Kainat) son estructuras din\u00e1micas que se movilizan entre el citosol y la membrana neuronal, donde act\u00faan como canales de calcio. Esto ha abierto nuevas v\u00edas de investigaci\u00f3n que tienen como objetivo explicar c\u00f3mo y por qu\u00e9 estos receptores llegan a la membrana sin\u00e1ptica o la abandonan.
El investigador David Soto, del grupo de investigaci\u00f3n de Neurobiolog\u00eda Celular y Molecular, y el jefe del subgrupo de Neurobiolog\u00eda de los receptores ionotr\u00f3picos de glutamato, Xavier Altafaj, han publicado recientemente dos estudios independientes en la revista Frontiers of Neuroscience. En sus estudios, se han identificado nuevos reguladores moleculares de la neurotransmisi\u00f3n glutamat\u00e9rgica que pueden contribuir a importantes cambios de paradigma en el campo y, sobre todo, ayudar a entender las perturbaciones en el tr\u00e1fico de receptores de glutamato implicados en la patog\u00e9nesis de las enfermedades neurol\u00f3gicas.
El trabajo del grupo de Soto (Gratac\u00f3s-Batlle et al., 2015) describe la carnitina palmitoiltransferasa 1C (CPT1c) como un nuevo regulador de la expresi\u00f3n de superficie de receptores AMPA (AMPARs) en neuronas. La modulaci\u00f3n fina del tr\u00e1fico en la membrana de los AMPARs es fundamental en la actividad sin\u00e1ptica normal y en procesos de plasticidad sin\u00e1ptica. Los autores presentan CPT1c como candidata para regular la fisiolog\u00eda neuronal de los AMPARs.
Por otra parte, el estudio publicado por el grupo de Xavier Altafaj (Grau et al., 2014) describe la prote\u00edna quinasa DYRK1A como un regulador directo de los receptores NMDA, y propone un nuevo mecanismo para el control de la neurotransmisi\u00f3n glutamat\u00e9rgica en las neuronas. En el contexto del s\u00edndrome de Down (SD), patolog\u00eda en la que el grupo de Altafaj hab\u00eda demostrado previamente el papel clave de DYRK1A y de la desregulaci\u00f3n de los receptores NMDAR (NMDAR), este estudio proporciona la evidencia molecular, celular y funcional que DYRK1A afecta directamente NMDAR, abriendo as\u00ed nuevas v\u00edas para entender y dise\u00f1ar estrategias terap\u00e9uticas.
