Los genes suelen expresarse siempre como en la escritura occidental: de izquierda a derecha en el lienzo blanco de nuestro ADN. As\u00ed, cuando hablamos de la actividad de nuestro genoma, en realidad nos estamos refiriendo a la expresi\u00f3n de los genes en este sentido de la doble cadena de ADN.
Sin embargo, desde hace un tiempo, se conoce la existencia de unas cuantas secuencias de ADN \u2018rebelde\u2019 que se activan al rev\u00e9s: de derecha a izquierda. Son conocidos como transcritos Antisentido.
Se sabe muy poco de sus funciones, pero hoy un trabajo co-dirigido por Manel Esteller, Director del Programa de Epigen\u00e9tica y Biolog\u00eda del Cancer (PEBC) del Instituto de Investigaci\u00f3n Biom\u00e9dica de Bellvitge (IDIBELL), Profesor de Gen\u00e9tica de la Universidad de Barcelona e Investigador ICREA y Sonia Guil del mismo departamento proporciona nuevas pistas y mecanismos para entender sus funciones y sus alteraciones en c\u00e1ncer.
El hallazgo se publica en la edici\u00f3n avanzada de revista Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS)<\/em>.

\u201cSi imaginamos una carretera por donde todos los coches van en el mismo sentido, hemos encontrado un coche que va en sentido contrario y choca contra uno de ellos\u201d explica Manel Estelller sobre el resultado de la investigaci\u00f3n publicada en PNAS.<\/em>
<\/em>\u201cConcretamente\u201d a\u00f1ade \u201ceste transcrito antisentido regula a un gen expresado de forma m\u00e1s normal que se llama Vimentina, asociada al proceso de invasi\u00f3n tumoral. Tambi\u00e9n describimos como en c\u00e1ncer de colon una alteraci\u00f3n epigen\u00e9tica trastorna este delicado equilibrio de coches que van en distintas direcciones por la misma v\u00eda\u201d.
\u201cOtro dato relevante del estudio es la descripci\u00f3n por primera vez de un mecanismo molecular que explica c\u00f3mo se mantiene todo este tr\u00e1fico creando un bucle tridimensional que permite la convivencia y autoregulaci\u00f3n de genes que se expresan en distintos sentidos\u201d, concluye la investigadora Sonia Guil.
Los resultados derivados de la investigaci\u00f3n desarrollada en el IDIBELL suponen tambi\u00e9n un avance en la b\u00fasqueda de nuevos biomarcadores de c\u00e1ncer y proporcionan las bases para futuras terapias contra las enfermedades humanas basadas en el desarrollo de mol\u00e9culas antisentido que puedan ser usadas como f\u00e1rmacos.
