El S\u00edndrome de Rett es la segunda causa m\u00e1s frecuente de retraso mental en mujeres, despu\u00e9s del S\u00edndrome de Down.
Es una enfermedad del desarrollo neuronal cuyo cuadro cl\u00ednico empieza a aparecer 6-18 meses despu\u00e9s del nacimiento y consiste en una p\u00e9rdida de capacidades intelectuales, sociales y motoras acompa\u00f1ada de comportamientos autistas como los movimientos repetidos de las manos.
Afecta aproximadamente a 1 de cada 10.000 – 15.000 ni\u00f1as y suele ser debido a la presencia de una mutaci\u00f3n en el gen MECP2, un gen epigen\u00e9tico que controla la actividad de muchos otros genes de la c\u00e9lula.
Actualmente, no existe tratamiento efectivo de la enfermedad, aunque los \u00faltimos avances cient\u00edficos indican que podr\u00eda ser posible revertir el s\u00edndrome. Hasta la fecha, hemos investigado distintos f\u00e1rmacos que mejoran algunos s\u00edntomas de la enfermedad. No obstante, es necesario hacer una evaluaci\u00f3n de sus efectos en neuronas y a nivel precl\u00ednico y es para conseguir esta financiaci\u00f3n que iniciamos esta campa\u00f1a.
