Investigadores del Grupo de Se\u00f1alizaci\u00f3n Molecular en C\u00e1ncer del Programa Oncobell del Instituto de Investigaci\u00f3n Biom\u00e9dica de Bellvitge (IDIBELL)- Programa ProCURE del Instituto Catal\u00e1n de Oncolog\u00eda (ICO) han identificado un receptor celular clave en los procesos de met\u00e1stasis en c\u00e1ncer de ovario. El hallazgo, publicado en Molecular Cancer Therapeutics<\/em>, da pie a la utilizaci\u00f3n de inhibidores de este receptor como diana terap\u00e9utica en las variantes m\u00e1s agresivas de la enfermedad.
En el trabajo del equipo de investigaci\u00f3n IDIBELL-ICO se ha aconseguido asociar la expresi\u00f3n del receptor CXCR4 en c\u00e9lulas tumorales de ovario a su potencial de diseminaci\u00f3n a trav\u00e9s del torrente sangu\u00edneo. CXCR4 es un receptor implicado en el movimiento de las c\u00e9lulas de la sangre, especialmente en aquellas ubicadas en la m\u00e9dula \u00f3sea, que ya hab\u00eda sido relacionado anteriormente con procesos de diseminaci\u00f3n en c\u00e1ncer de mama.
En estudios en modelos ortot\u00f3picos los investigadores demostraron que la administraci\u00f3n de inhibidores de CXCR4 en aquellos c\u00e1nceres donde previamente se hab\u00eda detectado la expresi\u00f3n elevada de este receptor, imped\u00eda en gran medida la propagaci\u00f3n de las c\u00e9lulas tumorales a nivel sangu\u00edneo y dentro del peritoneo. Paralelamente, tambi\u00e9n han observado que la eliminaci\u00f3n gen\u00e9tica de CXCR4 en cultivo celular da lugar a tumores de crecimiento m\u00e1s lento y m\u00e1s bajo porcentaje de diseminaci\u00f3n.
El diagn\u00f3stico del c\u00e1ncer de ovario se suele hacer tarde; en el 80% de los casos, los pacientes ya presentan met\u00e1stasis o diseminaciones peritoneales que los pueden afectar a otros \u00f3rganos vitales como el est\u00f3mago, ri\u00f1\u00f3n, pulm\u00f3n, etc. Por otra parte, si bien es cierto que la combinaci\u00f3n de cirug\u00eda y quimioterapia con derivados del platino funciona muy bien, el porcentaje de recurrencia de la enfermedad a los dos a\u00f1os es del 70%.
Los investigadores consideran que el estudio de c\u00f3mo las c\u00e9lulas tumorales diseminan es b\u00e1sico de cara a entender y mejorar el pron\u00f3stico de la enfermedad. Su l\u00ednea de investigaci\u00f3n se centra en identificar las mol\u00e9culas implicadas en esta diseminaci\u00f3n, que suele ir acompa\u00f1ada de una acumulaci\u00f3n de l\u00edquido en la zona del peritoneo (ascitis), y se termina propagando a nivel de torrente sangu\u00edneo. \u201cSi identificamos los factores que impulsan el movimiento de las c\u00e9lulas tumorales en estas zonas, podemos intentar bloquearlos para minimizar las posibilidades de met\u00e1stasis\u201d, comenta la Dra.
