Petri dishes are everyday objects in research laboratories. Cells or bacterial cultures grow in these Petri dishes and researchers observe the life of the cells and how they react to different stimuli. The American artist Klari Reis decided to give these Petri dishes an even more stimulating role, they became works of art.

When she was about twenty years old Klari was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease that kept her hospitalized for several months. At this time, the artist had the opportunity to observe her own cells under the microscope and the colorful explosion she saw through the different cell staining, inspired her in a major new project. Since 2013 the artist paints a daily Petri dish.

The work of Klari Reis has also inspired the poster for the 7th ICS research journey that is going to hold on June 16 at the University Hospital of Bellvitge and which focuses on infectious diseases.
