Sinergia will open its doors to cutting-edge research carried out by health institutions that work together in Bellvitge, one of the most active centers in biomedical research and health care in the country. The fifth edition of Sinergia will disseminate and share the responsible and innovative research of IDIBELL, the Catalan Institute of Oncology, the Bellvitge University Hospital, the University of Barcelona, and the Sant Joan de Déu Hospital, involving society to achieve a greater impact on the health.

Open day

On Saturday, October 21, citizens will enjoy a program of activities that has grown substantially compared to previous editions. At the Duran i Reynals Hospital, it will take place the IDIescape, the escape room in the IDIBELL laboratories, guided tours, and two informative talks, by Meritxell Rovira (IDIBELL-UB), who will talk about stem cells, diabetes, and pancreatic cancer, and Núria Adell (Sant Joan de Deu), who will talk about 3D technology in the operating room.

On the other hand, Bellvitge Park will host the most recreational aspect of the day: workshops for family audiences, a gymkhana to discover the neighborhood, a Zumba and dance-therapy masterclass, and a special end party: the concert of the DOrigen, who will perform “La Simfonia dels Herois”.

Young and old, friends and families, scientists and non-scientists, everyone is invited to participate in this day, which this year has the collaboration of city entities, such as the Sergio Manzano Municipal Sports Center, the Bellvitge Institute and the Club of Esplai of the neighborhood. Also, from health institutions such as the Medical Emergency System and the Blood and Tissue Bank. Schedules, registration, and details of all activities can be found at this link: https://sinergia.l-h.cat/programacio-sinergia-2023/

Research and health

On Tuesday, October 17, the Barradas Auditorium in L’Hospitalet will host the Recerca i Salut, som a prop teu conference, open to patients, families, and the general public. During the day, the audience and speakers will have the opportunity to discuss diseases that are treated and researched at Bellvitge.

During the morning, from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., professionals from ICO, Bellvitge Hospital, and IDIBELL will talk about comprehensive care for breast cancer. The day will end with a Nordic walking workshop. Between 6 and 7 p.m. the round table Innovation and kidney: use of new technologies in the approach to chronic kidney disease will take place, with Inés Rama (nephrologist at the Bellvitge University Hospital), Antonio Tombas (president of ADER and chronic kidney patient) and Daniel Rubio (chronic kidney patient and entrepreneur).

Multimedia material. We bring science closer to society

Starting on October 23, the website sinergia.l-h.cat will hold the virtual aspect of Sinergia. Six new monologues from the successful series Stand-up Science will be released, which gives a voice to the youngest IDIBELL researchers to talk about their research in a different way, through YouTube, and with a humorous scientific monologue. This is a project created thanks to the alliance between Torre Barrina, the L’Hospitalet City Council, and IDIBELL.

Two new Quinaciència! capsules will then be presented, where the researchers will talk about their research, their motivations, and their objectives. This year, the series will star Julián Cerón, a specialist in genetic modification techniques, and Ramon Alemany, who studies the use of viruses in cancer therapy.

There will also be room for the dissemination of health innovation, a process that aligns basic research with the interests of clinical practice. This year, the Tapes d’Innovació capsules will focus on disseminating the development of a biological drug to resolve immuno-inflammatory processes, the project to use stem cells to produce meat in the laboratory, the use of E-extendía, a video game for treating impulsivity and gambling addiction, and, finally, the operation of the Pediatric Computational Imaging Center of Sant Joan de Deu.

Sinergia is the L’Hospitalet health research and innovation festival, led by the L’Hospitalet City Council and framed in the strategic project 4locaLHealth: Research, Innovation, and Health in the territory through personalized medicine (PECT, co-financed with European FEDER funds).

The Bellvitge Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBELL) is a biomedical research center created in 2004. It is participated by the Bellvitge University Hospital and the Viladecans Hospital of the Catalan Institute of Health, the Catalan Institute of Oncology, the University of Barcelona and the City Council of L’Hospitalet de Llobregat.

IDIBELL is a member of the Campus of International Excellence of the University of Barcelona HUBc and is part of the CERCA institution of the Generalitat de Catalunya. In 2009 it became one of the first five Spanish research centers accredited as a health research institute by the Carlos III Health Institute. In addition, it is part of the “HR Excellence in Research” program of the European Union and is a member of EATRIS and REGIC. Since 2018, IDIBELL has been an Accredited Center of the AECC Scientific Foundation (FCAECC).
