The educational Tandem that IDIBELL and the Institut Bellvitge have been carrying out since the course 2017-18, pedals at a good pace. Throughout this course, apart from giving continuity to the structural projects, new proposals have been launched, such as the active participation of Institute students in the IDIBELL sLHam for women scientists, the creation of a new Sant Jordi award or the co-creation of contents and activities for the new subject of Biomedicine.

The act that closed the Tandem course was, precisely, the celebration, at the IDIBELL facilities, of the I URIB Biomedicine Congress, where the students of the Biomedicine subject of 1st year of Baccalaureate presented the scientific posters that they made throughout the course, the result, in some cases, of visits to IDIBELL, such as the one carried out on the flow cytometry platform. The congress featured a plenary talk by Dr. Esteban Hoijman and with the participation of the group of pre-doctoral students from IDIBELL and the 4th ESO students of the scientific itinerary.

On the occasion of Sant Jordi, a motivational talk was organized, prior to the writing of scientific reports by the students of the 1st and 2nd year of the Scientific Baccalaureate, given by the researcher Julián Cerón, where ethics and genetic engineering were discussed. And with the aim of involving the students of the Artistic Baccalaureate, the Santa Jordina de la Ciència illustration contest was created. The winning illustration became a greeting postcard for the day, which was delivered to the IDIBELL workers.

The last novelty of the course was the participation of two students in the sLHam for women scientists at IDIBELL, thanks to the creation of the junior section of the sLHam. The proposal, which is expected to continue, aims to show the work and motivations of the students who carry out their research work with the co-tutorship of IDIBELL.

Throughout the 2022-23 academic year, the Tandem has successfully completed two unique projects. On the one hand, the pilot project “What are you playing for?”, promoted by EduCAC and implemented in the classroom the previous year. The professionals involved presented the conclusions obtained during the study to the teaching team and the families involved. And an informative audiovisual was filmed for its media diffusion. On the other hand, the implementation of the STARS GAME project (financed by the ERASMUS+ call) has also been completed, which for three academic years has been carried out with all the students of 1st ESO.

The Tandem has given continuity to its structural projects: the URIB, with the design of a new laboratory practice in audiovisual format, which includes an interview with Dr. Sara Olivera; the Women of Science project of the Aula L’H TV program, carried out by the students of the 2nd year of the Artistic Baccalaureate; and the creation of the 6th issue of the Life&Science magazine, in which all the 3rd ESO groups and also the artistic Baccalaureate have participated. Among others, the magazine contains an interview with the bioinformatics Elisabet Munté and a chronicle about the visit of the Scientific Director of IDIBELL, Dr. Fernando Fernández Aranda, to the students of 1st year of Baccalaureate.

Lastly, throughout the academic year several groups of students have actively participated in IDIBELL educational and outreach activities, such as those organized on the occasion of Sinergia, where students from 3rd year of ESO and 1st and 2nd year of Baccalaureate visited the center’s facilities, they received talks and participated in a Campus discovery gymkhana, or in the UniStem Day event, in which the 4th ESO students of the scientific itinerary participated. And as usual, two 1st year Baccalaureate students have started their Research Work under the co-tutorship of two IDIBELL researchers, Dr. Francisco Ciruela and Dr. Pino Alonso.

The Bellvitge Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBELL) is a biomedical research center created in 2004. It is participated by the Bellvitge University Hospital and the Viladecans Hospital of the Catalan Institute of Health, the Catalan Institute of Oncology, the University of Barcelona and the City Council of L’Hospitalet de Llobregat.

IDIBELL is a member of the Campus of International Excellence of the University of Barcelona HUBc and is part of the CERCA institution of the Generalitat de Catalunya. In 2009 it became one of the first five Spanish research centers accredited as a health research institute by the Carlos III Health Institute. In addition, it is part of the “HR Excellence in Research” program of the European Union and is a member of EATRIS and REGIC. Since 2018, IDIBELL has been an Accredited Center of the AECC Scientific Foundation (FCAECC).
