Cystic fibrosis is the most common inherited disease<\/strong> in the Caucasian population.\u00a0It is caused by a genetic mutation that\u00a0inflicts\u00a0damage to the airways, among other effects.\u00a0Airways\u00a0dehydrate and produce a much\u00a0stickier\u00a0mucus that traps pathogens more easily, leading to recurrent infections and inflammation<\/strong>, which ends up being a chronic problem in people with cystic fibrosis.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Effects on the respiratory tract<\/strong> induce an increase in reactive oxygen species, unstable molecules that attack\u00a0everything\u00a0around them and cause oxidative stress. Oxidative stress<\/strong> degrades cells and tissues and reduces the effectiveness of\u00a0defences\u00a0against external aggression,\u00a0thereby\u00a0favouring\u00a0infections and inflammation.\u00a0In this regard, cells activate a very complex genetically regulated protective response.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n A\u00a0scientific\u00a0study by the IDIBELL\u00a0research\u00a0group on\u00a0<\/span>Immunoinflammatory Processes and Gene Therapy<\/span><\/a>\u00a0with the support of the Bioinformatics Unit has conducted an analysis with the aim of finding new genes and regulators related to the response to oxidative stress.\u00a0They have identified several genes and regulators that play an important role in this, and therefore\u00a0they\u00a0would be possible candidates for designing\u00a0new\u00a0therapies<\/strong>.\u00a0Besides,\u00a0the same research\u00a0also\u00a0looked for\u00a0commercialized\u00a0drugs that could\u00a0help<\/strong> fight oxidative stress using the\u00a0identified\u00a0genes.\u00a0This project has received funding from the\u00a0<\/span>Catalan Association of\u00a0Cystic Fibrosis<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(ACFQ).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n “These drugs, alone or in combination with current treatments, could benefit patients with cystic fibrosis by preventing accelerated lung degradation, which is one of the worst effects of the disease,”<\/span><\/i>\u00a0said\u00a0<\/span>Dr\u00a0Josep\u00a0Maria Aran<\/span><\/b>,\u00a0leader of\u00a0this work,\u00a0<\/span>“but these are preliminary\u00a0results,\u00a0we need to do more controlled experiments and clinical trials\u00a0in order to\u00a0bring\u00a0this\u00a0into practice.”<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n The Bellvitge Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBELL) is a biomedical research center created in 2004. It is participated by the Bellvitge University Hospital and the Viladecans Hospital of the Catalan Institute of Health, the Catalan Institute of Oncology, the University of Barcelona and the City Council of L\u2019Hospitalet de Llobregat.<\/em><\/p>\n IDIBELL is a member of the Campus of International Excellence of the University of Barcelona HUBc and is part of the CERCA institution of the Generalitat de Catalunya. In 2009 it became one of the first five Spanish research centers accredited as a health research institute by the Carlos III Health Institute. In addition, it is part of the \u201cHR Excellence in Research\u201d program of the European Union and is a member of EATRIS and REGIC.
