Molecular signaling in cancer

Summary

The molecular signaling cascades which are produced at the cell level are essential for responding to changes in its environment or to alter its homeostasis, e.g. at the cell proliferation, movement, growth or metabolism levels. Understanding the mechanism of signal transduction enables us to explain how the alterations produced in many pathologies are controlled. As such, the changes in signalling can be used to detect the presence of many diseases and the signalling molecules can become therapeutic targets. Furthermore, these signalling pathways are affected in response to therapies used to treat diseases such as cancer, and are involved in creating drug resistance.

Strategic lines

The role of different signalling pathways in physiological processes: how members of the TGFbeta and EGFR families control angiogenesis, or the role of different ubiquitin ligases which regulate signalling protein function.
Epithelial ovarian cancer: the role of different receptor tyrosine kinases (such as PDGF or c-Kit receptors) and cytokine receptors (such as CXCR4) in the development and metastasis of this type of cancer.
Participation of different signalling pathways and metabolic changes in creating chemotherapy resistance in ovarian, testicular and epithelial cancers.
Modification of cellular pH using anionophoric substances as a new therapeutic strategy for lung cancer treatment.
Preclinical development of novel anticancer drugs against therapeutic targets related to treatment resistance.
Evaluation of new drug delivery systems for cancer treatment by nanoencapsulation of antitumor compounds.

Estudio preclínico y traslacional de nuevos agentes anticancerosos derivados de tambjaminas para el tratamiento del cáncer de pulmón humano

Identificar nuevas moléculas más eficaces para combatir el cáncer de pulmón, bajo diversas perspectivas como son la química médica, formulación de nuevos fármacos, simulación computacional, biología celular in vitro y técnicas bioquímicas, transcriptómica y análisis de proteómica, así como en investigación traslacional en modelos de xenotrasplante, permitirá que seamos capaces de completar con éxito los estudios preclínicos de una prometedora nueva familia de compuestos anticancerosos. La desregulación del pH es una característica común que confiere ventajas adaptativas a las células cancerosas. Proponemos que moléculas que selectivamente poseen la capacidad de disminuir el pH intracelular serían de gran interés como nuevos agentes quimioterapéuticos para el tratamiento del cáncer de pulmón. Evaluar la seguridad y eficacia de estos compuestos in vivo, desarrollar una innovadora nanoformulación farmacológica con el fin de mejorar la selectividad y la eficacia, así como ensayar una nueva y prometedora vía de administración del fármaco.
