A scientific study led by Genevieve Buckland and Carlos Alberto Gonzalez Svatetz, of the Nutrition, Environment and Cancer Unit at ICO-IDIBELL has been the winner of the XXIII Mayo Editions Awards 2010 in the category of best Spanish article published in a foreign magazine.
The article, entitled “Adherence to a Mediterranean diet and Risk of gastric adenocarcinoma Within the European Prospective Investigation Into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) cohort study”, was published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (Am J Clin Nutr 2010, 91:381 -90). The study demonstrates for the first time that the Mediterranean diet has significant protective effect against gastric cancer.
The jury was Francesc Cardellach, dean of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Barcelona, Joaquim Coll Daroca, dean of the Faculty of Medicine of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, Josep Bombi Latorre, president of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Catalonia and the Balearic Islands, Miquel Villardell, president of the Medical Association of Barcelona and Ramon Planas and Xavier Tena, director and editor of the journal Siete Días Médicos.
The award was conceded on May 18 during a ceremony at the Palau de la Musica Catalana in Barcelona.
