The University Hospital of Bellvitge is a pioneer in Spain in the intraoperative use of these techniques in patients with brain tumors
Neurophysiological monitoring has reduced to less than 5 % incidence of permanent deficits mobility of patients operated The combined use of both techniques in some cases increases significantly the potential sequelae predictor and increase surgical success . The Neurofunctional Unit, created by the HUB and ICO Hospitalet, has made possible to get one of the lowest rates on surgical complication of high-grade gliomas in Spain
The main goal of surgery in the treatment of brain tumors is to increase the survival of patients and improve their quality of life. It is therefore essential to achieve the maximum tumor resection possible , while preserving the patient’s neurological function. This is especially difficult in those tumors located in eloquent brain areas , ie those areas containing
important neurological functions such as language, movement, memory or vision. For all these reasons, in recent years neuroncology has focused on implementation and consolidation of neurophysiological intraoperative mapping and monitoring, innovative techniques to significantly increase patient safety during surgery.
