As every year, Stanford University has published the update of the list of the top 2% most cited scientists in different research areas, the 2023 World’s Top 2% Scientists. This is considered one of the most prestigious rankings in the world and is based on the analysis of the most cited papers from 1996 until the end of 2022 according to the Scopus bibliometric database. This list includes more than 180,000 researchers from around the world, distributed among 22 scientific fields and 176 subfields.
The 2023 edition of this ranking features 30 IDIBELL researchers from three research areas: cancer, neurosciences and translational medicine. Three of them stand out because of their scientific achievements: Dr Esteve Fernández, leader of the IDIBELL and ICO tobacco control research group, is positioned as number one in Catalunya and two in Spain in the Public Health subfield. In the Clinical Medicine field, two other researchers stand out: the gynecologic cancer group leader in IDIBELL and HUB, Dr Xavier Matias-Guiu, is ranked as second in Catalunya and third in Spain in the Pathology subfield, while Dr Cosme Gay-Escoda is first and only in Catalunya and fifth in Spain in the Dentistry subfield. In IDIBELL, he leads the odontological and maxillofacial pathology and therapeutics research group.
Other researchers are positioned among the top 10 in Catalunya in their own subfield: Jordi Carratalà (3rd in Microbiology), Isabel Fabregat (6th in Biochemistry & Molecular Biology), Francesc Formiga (4th General & Internal Medicine) and Sebastiano Biondo (10th in Surgery).
