A total of 37 researchers linked to IDIBELL, the Bellvitge University Hospital (HUB) and the Catalan Institute of Oncology (ICO) appear in the April 2026 edition of the Ranking of Spanish and Spanish Women Researchers, a classification prepared by the Cybermetrics Laboratory of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) that aims to give visibility to female talent in research.
The ranking, widely recognized at the national level, identifies the researchers with the greatest scientific impact based on bibliometric indicators – number of citations, h-index – obtained from open platforms such as Google Scholar, ORCID and OpenAlex. The 2026 edition includes 11,000 Spanish researchers or those linked to Spanish research institutions, and the data to prepare it were collected at the end of April this year.
Bellvitge female researchers, in the Spanish top
Among the best-positioned researchers at the Bellvitge Health Campuses, five women stand out in particular, who are among the 1,000 best in Spain. Dr. Susana Jiménez-Murcia heads the ranking in position 94, followed by Drs. Aurora Pujol (217), Isabel Fabregat (304), Paula Jakszyn (393) and Carmen Ardanuy (655).
The representation of the Bellvitge campus in this classification highlights the strength of a scientific ecosystem that stands out for its activity in areas such as oncology, rare diseases, neurosciences, translational medicine, clinical research and public health, reflecting the diversity and scientific excellence of the Campus. The top 5,000 researchers included in the ranking also include Marta Pineda, Purificación Muñoz, Mónica Gómez, Agatha Schlüter, Cristina Muñoz-Pinedo, Mireia Díaz, Delphine Casabonne, Mónica Povedano, Laura Moragas, Laura Valle, Olga Tura, Estela Càmara, Montserrat Ruiz, Esther Bertran, Marisa Mena, Carolina Florian and Judith Peñafiel.
It is completed by 15 more researchers: Bárbara Rivera, Clara Bofarull, Marta Simó, Cristina Vintró, Julia Miró, Sara Larriba, Maria Eulàlia Juvé, Mireya Plass, Pilar Mur, Laura Planas, Valentina Vélez, Alessandra Giorgetti, Rosario López, Lucía Camacho and Mariona Terradas.
Of the total number of Bellvitge professionals recognized, all are linked to IDIBELL, 10 of them also to the Bellvitge University Hospital and 6 also to the Catalan Institute of Oncology, evidencing the fundamental role of women in scientific production and the leadership of the research carried out on campus.
Beyond individual positions, the inclusion of 37 female researchers in this ranking reinforces the positioning of the Bellvitge Campus as one of the main biomedical research hubs in southern Europe and reflects the impact and international projection of its scientific activity, while highlighting the weight of women scientists in the generation of cutting-edge knowledge and innovation in health in our house.
The Bellvitge Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBELL) is a research centre created in 2004 and specialising in cancer, neuroscience, translational medicine and regenerative medicine. It has a team of more than 1,500 professionals who, from 73 research groups, publish more than 1,400 scientific articles a year. L’IDIBELL is participated by the Bellvitge University Hospital and the Viladecans Hospital of the Catalan Health Institute, the Catalan Institute of Oncology, the University of Barcelona and the City Council of L’Hospitalet de Llobregat.
IDIBELL is a member of the Campus d’Excelencia Internacional of the University of Barcelona HUBc and is part of the CERCA institution of the Generalitat de Catalunya. In 2009 it became one of the first five Spanish research centres accredited as a health research institute by the Carlos III Health Institute. In addition, it is part of the HR Excellence in Research program of the European Union and is a member of EATRIS and REGIC. Since 2018, IDIBELL has been an Accredited Centre of the AECC Scientific Foundation (FCAECC).
