Dr. Sebastiano Biondo, head of the Digestive Tube Pathology research group at IDIBELL and the Bellvitge University Hospital, has obtained the position of Professor of Surgery at the University of Barcelona in the competition held on July 20.

Dr. Biondo specialized in general and digestive surgery at the Oncology Institute of the University of Messina and the Bellvitge University Hospital. He obtained his doctorate in medicine and surgery in 1997, with an extraordinary doctorate award. Since 1998 he has developed his care work in colorectal surgery, in which he has obtained great international recognition.

In the field of teaching, he has had a long history linked to the University of Barcelona. Since 2015 he has been an associate professor, and since 2017 he has the Advanced Research accreditation for the University Qualification Agency of Catalonia (AQU), mandatory to access the university chair.

The Bellvitge Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBELL) is a biomedical research center created in 2004. It is participated by the Bellvitge University Hospital and the Viladecans Hospital of the Catalan Institute of Health, the Catalan Institute of Oncology, the University of Barcelona and the City Council of L’Hospitalet de Llobregat.

IDIBELL is a member of the Campus of International Excellence of the University of Barcelona HUBc and is part of the CERCA institution of the Generalitat de Catalunya. In 2009 it became one of the first five Spanish research centers accredited as a health research institute by the Carlos III Health Institute. In addition, it is part of the “HR Excellence in Research” program of the European Union and is a member of EATRIS and REGIC. Since 2018, IDIBELL has been an Accredited Center of the AECC Scientific Foundation (FCAECC).
