The development of the EPICUP epigenomic tool, capable of improving the diagnosis of metastases of unknown origin, has been awarded the Prize for Scientific Innovation in its Clinical Research modality by the Pfizer Foundation, which was given to the first author of the study, Dr. Sebastian Morán, at an event held at the Hospital la Fe in Valencia.

Properly handling metastases of unknown origin is a major need in medical oncology. The group of Dr. Manel Esteller, director of the Epigenetics and Cancer Biology program of IDIBELL, ICREA researcher and Professor of Genetics of the University of Barcelona, developed EPICUP based on the results published in The Lancet Oncology and in collaboration with the company Ferrer.

The Prize is the highest recognition that the Pfizer Foundation grants to researchers who dedicate their efforts to the search for innovative solutions in health, to improve the quality of life and well-being of people, provide solutions to relevant medical needs or encourage the advancement of scientific knowledge.
