Manel Esteller, head of the Epigenetics and Cancer Biology Program at IDIBELL, ICREA researcher and professor of genetics at the University of Barcelona, is the biomedical scientist with projects in Spain most cited by other scientists, according to the latest edition of the Webometrics classification, published on February 26th by the cybermetrics group of the Superior Council of Scientific Research (CSIC).

The Webometrics ranking is based on the 200 million academic documents registered in the Google Scholar database, which includes information of 49,000 Spanish researchers and around one million researchers from around the world. As for the Spanish ranking referring, Spanish researchers based abroad and foreign researchers living in Spain are included.

The classification is based on two parameters. On the one hand, the total number of citations that a researcher has received in the scientific literature for articles published throughout his career. On the other, the so-called h-index, which takes into account both the quantity and the quality of the scientific production.

Manel Esteller’s research focuses on the epigenetic mechanisms involved in the appearance and progression of human diseases, mainly cancer. Results from their studies have led, besides unveiling the molecular bases of several pathologies, to the development of new diagnostic tools and treatments.
