On April 21st the director of the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC), Francesc Subirada and the head of its Department of Life Sciences, Modesto Orozco, delivered a seminar at IDIBELL to publicize the resources that their center can provide to IDIBELL researchers as well as new opportunities for collaboration.

The BSC houses the computer Mare Nostrum. It is the most powerful in Spain and is among the most potent hundred worldwide. The center has two functions: first, it is a center of research in various fields. Modesto Orozco is responsible for research in the department of life sciences and states that “the chemistry and computational biology advance so that in the next ten years, in silico techniques will take the lead in the description, rationalization and prediction of biological systems”.

Furthermore, the BSC is a service infrastructure for researchers across Europe. Its director, Francesc Subirada explained that researchers should be aware that these services exist and thay they can access for free, through competitive proposals are evaluated by a committee of international experts. Subirada also invited IDIBELL researchers to seek synergies when presenting competitive projects with the department of life sciences.

With the conclusion of this seminar, the direction of IDIBELL has took a step to build a relationship of trust between the two centers to facilitate the implementation of joint projects that will result in health benefit of patients.
