Robotic surgery is able to reduce the average hospital stay of highly complex procedures to 2.2 days The robotic surgical system with three-dimensional view provides greater accuracy and security both in laparoscopic surgery and oncology. The University Hospital of Bellvitge, with support from the Institute of Biomedical Research of Bellvitge (IDIBELL), has since 2009 of this innovative technology, which makes it one of the first hospitals in surgical interventions robotic and has allowed their professionals have acquired a great experience.

“Robotic surgery offers the possibility of working with much more precision and reliability thanks to the three-dimensional vision and freedom of movement of their claws, which assimilate direct and intuitive hand movements made by the surgeon at the console” explains Dr. Jordi Ponce, Chief of Gynecology, University Hospital of Bellvitge. The new technology, which is used for different surgical approaches, is very effective in complex interventions such as pelvic cancer surgery and aorto-caval or radical hysterectomy lymphadenectomy, as well as correction procedures such as urinary incontinence colposacropexy with meshes.

In order to publicize these and other innovations in the field of gynecology, the next 18,19 and 20 March the XIV International Course in Gynecological Surgery organized by the Gynecology Department of the Hospital de Bellvitge be held. The first day, the 300 attendees can see live two robotic surgeries that will be broadcast in 3D, ie can experience what somehow sees the surgeon when using the system. In addition, tables video-discussion held with recognized recognized in teaching surgical gynecologic surgical experts, opinion leaders and collaborators.

As in previous editions, the commitment to live surgery performed by leading figures from the international scene progress. This year will be a tribute to the masters of surgical gynecology doctors Balagueró L., L. Abad, D. Dargent, D. Querleu and X. Magriñá, some enforcement interventions live. “We have the most important figures in the field of gynecologic surgery so they can share their experience with new generations of specialists,” says Dr. Ponce.

Studies have shown that robotic surgery procedures applied to selected improves the results achieved with other treatments. In addition to decreasing the average time of surgery, hospital stay, the patient is reduced to 2.2 days, much less a week is required in a conventional laparotomy.

The Department of Gynecology, University Hospital of Bellvitge is a reference center in ovarian, vulvar and cervical cancer, interventions that have significantly reduced perioperative complications due to the systematic application of the technique, vaginal and robotics, especially important in endometrial cancer. The service specializes in surgical gynecology and particularly in oncological surgery. Performed between 800 and 1,000 surgical procedures each year and has consolidated its efficiency with an average stay of less than 2.4 days, despite the growing oncology select highly complex processes and automation trend. In this sense, leads a specific master’s degree in gynecologic oncology at the University of Barcelona and is an active member of the boards of the Spanish Society of Gynecologic Oncology SEGO and the European Society of Gynecological Robotic Surgery (SERGS).
