The Echevarne Foundation awards the VI National Award for Oncology
the director of the Epigenetics and Cancer Biology Program at IDIBELL, ICREA researcher and professor at the University of Barcelona, Manel Esteller, for his work “Epigenomics of cancer: application of knowledge”.
The scientific committee of the prize is made up of internationally renowned scientists who have agreed unanimously to grant this award to Esteller for his research in the field of epigenetics. The committee has highlighted the important contributions of research to understanding the behavior of cancer cells, especially in the deregulation of tumor suppressor genes and repetitive sequences in cancer. Due in part to these studies have developed new diagnostic tests and they are testing new treatment applications focused on epigenetic drugs, especially against cancer.
The VI National Oncology Prize Echevarne Foundation has established itself as a leader in recognizing the work of Spanish researchers in the field of oncology. With a cash prize of € 50,000, this sixth edition of the National Oncology Prize Echevarne Foundation awards the scientific effort that has contributed to the development of knowledge of cancer genomes, its alterations, transcriptome and / or epigenome and its functional performance in cellular transformation and / or tumor progression, including metastatic spread.
In 1995 he convened the first edition of this award and since then Echevarne Foundation has recognized the research work of Drs Carlos Lopez-Otin, Maria A. Blasco, Manuel Serrano and Xosé Bustelo (ex-aequo); Jesús F. San Miguel and Emili Montserrat (ex-aequo); Eugenio Santos and now Manel Esteller.
