From genetic studies in airway cells of asthmatic patients and control, Miguel A. Valverde said that “we can reach a general and novel conclusion: alterations in intracellular calcium concentration have an impact on the pathophysiology of asthma”. Although he added “in diseases such as hypertension, myocardial infarction or asthma we wouldn’t find a single gene that where a specific mutation determine the disease and there must also be taken into account environmental factors. They are polygenic and multifactorial diseases. ”
Valverde explained that his research has two objectives: On one hand, know from the molecular point of view how ion channels work and on the other “a more translational aspect aims to study from the genetic point of view if the alterations in proteins that form ion channels in cell membranes are associated with some disease”. Currently the laboratory of Miguel A. Valverde studies the genetics of TPR channels in relation to asthma, migraine, cardiovascular diseases and Alzheimer.
