The hospital has shared this award with the Son Dureta University Hospital, University Hospital of Salamanca, and the Health Group of Sant Joan de Déu – Clínic Hospital.

This is the fourth time that the Bellvitge University Hospital get this award in the eleven year history of Top 20, and it means, once again, an objective recognition of its good performance on indicators of quality, performance and efficiency, the result of the efforts of all the professionals.

The award ceremony took place in Madrid. During the ceremony, the guest speaker Professor of Economics at the University Pompeu Fabra Guillem López Casasnovas, delivered the lecture For a solvent and flexible health care system.

Hospitals TOP 20 is the only program to evaluate acute hospitals in Spain. The study was carried out by Iasist company and it is based on objective indicators of quality, performance and efficiency, obtained from data usually recorded by hospitals. It provides to health sector a useful comparison for improving results.

In this edition have voluntarily participated 165 centers, the highest number of participants so far, of which 134 were from the NHS and 31 of private centres.

The evaluated hospitals were divided into seven categories according to their size and their attachment to the public or private sector. To assess the overall hospital management, eight health care quality indicators (mortality, complications, readmissions), appropriateness of clinical practice (ambulatory surgery and avoidable hospitalizations) and efficiency (placements, productivity and cost) were taken into account.

In addition, each hospital could also participate in the evaluation of six clinical areas (heart disease, gastrointestinal, women’s area, respiratory, nervous system, and trauma), and each of them have been awarded with specific prizes.
